Looking for a SmartWOD alternative?

First thing worth knowing: “SmartWOD” is two apps, not one. There is the WOD Timer for AMRAP, EMOM, For Time, Tabata and custom MIX work, and a separate Workout Generator that builds functional-fitness sessions from the gear you have. Both are good. The timer is clean and the generator is genuinely equipment-aware, suggesting work for whatever you have at home, in a box, or in a hotel gym. If you train CrossFit or functional fitness, the whole thing speaks your language, and plenty of people love it for good reason. If that describes you, you are already in the right place.

This page is for the people the two-app setup does not quite fit. There are three versions of that, and which one you are tells you what to look for.

You are not really a CrossFit person

SmartWOD is built around WOD formats and functional movements. If you train general strength plus conditioning, or you just want to stay strong and fit in the time you have, a CrossFit-shaped tool is tuned for a sport you are not playing. Every suggestion needs translating before you can use it, which is friction on a day you wanted less of it. The thing to look for instead is a tool built for the way you train now, not one you adapt every session.

You only wanted one app

The split between timer and generator is fine if you want both. But if your ideal is to open one thing, see today’s workout, and have the timer already wired to it, two apps is one context-switch more than the day called for. A single app that carries the workout and the clock together removes that step.

You want the time to drive the workout

The generator hands you WODs, random or filtered by movement and equipment. Good for variety when a WOD is what you came for. What it will not do is start from how much time you have today or how you feel, so you are still the one deciding the shape of the session before it fills in the movements. The alternative inverts that: you give it your window, your gear, and your energy, and it picks the whole session to fit. The decision you keep making every day moves off your plate.

A 25-minute session is not a watered-down WOD

This is worth settling before you switch anything. Building a session around your time window holds up in the research. The review “No Time to Lift?” (Iversen et al. 2021, Sports Medicine) consolidates how short resistance sessions built on compound lifts hold their own for strength and fitness. A 2025 meta-analysis (Zhang et al., Sports Medicine) found pairing movements as supersets cuts session time with similar long-term gains.

The honest limit applies to everyone: short, general sessions serve fitness and sustainable strength, not CrossFit competition prep or powerlifting peaking.

Different jobs. SmartWOD suits people who think in WODs and want a sharp functional-fitness timer. Kronos suits the busy, non-CrossFit day when you just need a solid workout picked for you, shaped to the time and gear you have. Prices are left out on purpose; they change by storefront, so check the listing on your phone.

Other tools worth a look

Match the tool to the part of SmartWOD you are leaving behind:

Which one is right depends entirely on what you stopped using SmartWOD for.

Where Kronos fits

Kronos covers the third case from earlier: you tell it your time, equipment, and mood, it picks today’s workout, and it counts you through it. Ask for a strength day and it runs straight sets with proper rest, and tracks your main lifts if you want the numbers, optional and easy to switch off. No WOD to translate, no second app, no 40-minute session on a 25-minute day. It is not trying to be SmartWOD. It is the workout you get through on a busy, non-CrossFit day. It ships in nine languages, Spanish, Portuguese and French included, with every exercise name translated. And if you do think in WODs sometimes, the Library has Cindy, Chelsea, Helen and Annie written out with their scaling and scoring.

The interval timer is free and ad-free, no account, on the App Store and Google Play. A free account adds five generated workouts, day 1 of any program, and three Library or self-built runs a month. Pro lifts the caps.

We checked SmartWOD’s own site, linked above, on 5 September 2026. We make Kronos, so read the comparison with that in mind.

The questions people ask next

What is a good SmartWOD alternative?

It depends what you are replacing. For functional-fitness WODs and a clean AMRAP/EMOM timer, SmartWOD is hard to beat. For a workout shaped to your time, equipment, and mood without thinking in WODs, look at Kronos. The timer is free forever; a free account comes with five generated workouts.

Is SmartWOD free?

The SmartWOD WOD Timer is free with a Premium tier; its custom MIX timer gives you one free MIX workout before Premium. The Workout Generator is a separate app with its own download. So 'SmartWOD' is really two apps that work together. Handy if you want both, a bit more to manage if you only wanted one.

Does Kronos do AMRAP and EMOM like SmartWOD?

Yes. The free Kronos timer covers AMRAP, EMOM, Tabata, For Time, and full custom intervals. The difference is that Kronos can also pick the workout for you, shaped to your time and equipment, instead of only timing the WOD you brought.
